Mae West was a guest on the December 12, 1937 episode of The Chase and Sanborn Hour and played an unrepentant Eve in an "Adam and Eve" skit by Arch Oboler. It caused an uproar and the FCC found that it "violated the ethics of decency." NBC issued an apology during the next show (but I don't have that episode. Mae West didn't appear on the radio again until 1950. More in the google news archives: http://tinyurl.com/9tkqyyf

The word cruisin' doesn't appear in the dictionary, but it's a familiar word to millions of people who did it. CRUISIN' THE FIFTIES AND SIXTIES, is a year-by-year recreation of pop music radio during the years 1955 through 1970. Each album is not just a collection of the top pop music of a particular year, but a total recreation by a top disk jockey (of that year) doing his original program over a major pop music station. That means actual commercials, promotional jingles, sound effects,...

THE BIG SHOW In 1950, the advent of television was not only causing concern in the film industry but radio was beginning to feel the effect as well. In short, audiences were dwindling. To combat the problem, NBC spent lots of money to produce The Big Show , a 90 minute radio program which would feature famous guests performing skits, songs, and comedic routines. Tallulah Bankhead was asked to host the show. She had guested in various radio programs in the past but had never done anything on an...

RICHARD DIAMOND, PRIVATE DETECTIVE In 1945, Dick Powell portrayed Phillip Marlowe in the movie "Murder My Sweet" based on Raymond Chandler's novel "Farewell My Lovely". This was a radical departure in character for Mr. Powell from a Hollywood song and dance man to a hard-boiled detective. On June 11,1945, Lux Radio Theatre brought "Murder My Sweet" to radio, again with Dick Powell in the lead. These two performances prompted his selection for the part of Richard...

YOURS TRULY, JOHNNY DOLLAR For over twelve years, from 1949 through 1962 (including a one year hiatus in 1954-1955), this series recounted the cases "the man with the action-packed expense account, America’s fabulous freelance insurance investigator, Johnny Dollar". Johnny was an accomplished 'padder' of his expense account. The name of the show derives from the fact that he closed each show by totaling his expense account, and signing it "End of report... 21st PRECINCT Broadcast from July 7th 1953 through November 1st 1956 on the CBS network. 21st Precinct was a very dramatic police drama. CBS decided to use New York City as the backdrop for this series and to focus on the happenings in an actual police precinct. The premise was to put the listener into the drama from the opening phone call until the final report was written. The 21st was described as "just lines on a map of the city of New York. Most of the 173,000 people wedged into the...

BARRIE CRAIG, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR William Gargan, who also played the better known television (and radio) detective Martin Kane, was the voice of New York eye Barrie Craig while Ralph Bell portrayed his associate, Lt. As the promos went, he was "your man when you can't go to the cops. Confidentiality a specialty." This...

THE WHISTLER You're walking alone on the street at night, but then you hear another set of footsteps and a haunting tune being whistled by an unseen stranger. Fritz Lang used an similar premise in his 1930s German movie with Peter Lorre playing M , a psychopathic murderer of children. But the American radio series was even creepier. The unseen Whistler didn't kill anyone (that we know of), but he certainly loved watching murders take place, narrating them for us, and chuckling at the suffering...

ADVENTURES OF PHILIP MARLOWE Elements of mystery have always been represented in literature, but the detective story didn't arrive on the scene until the mid 1800's. Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue , published in 1841, was the first. The Murder's main character, C. Auguste Dupin, was a brilliant detective who relied on superior deductive powers to solve the crime. He and his unnamed narrator companion solved this and two other mysteries. Later in the 19th century Sir Arthur...

BOSTON BLACKIE Boston Blackie is a fictional character who has been on both sides of the law. As originally created by author Jack Boyle, he was a safecracker -- a hardened criminal who had served time in a California prison. Prowling the underworld as a detective in adaptations for films, radio, and television, the detective Boston Blackie was "an enemy to those who make him an enemy, friend to those who have no friend". The Boston Blackie radio series, starring Chester Morris, began...

THE SIX SHOOTER The Six Shooter brought James Stewart to the NBC microphone on September 20, 1953, in a fine series of folksy Western adventures. Stewart was never better on the air than in this drama of Britt Ponset, frontier drifter created by Frank Burt. The epigraph set it up nicely: "The man in the saddle is angular and long-legged: his skin is sun dyed brown. The gun in his holster is gray steel and rainbow mother-of-pearl. People call them both The Six Shooter." Ponset was a...

LibriVox recording of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Read by John Greenman. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (published 1876) is a very well-known and popular story concerning American youth. Mark Twain's lively tale of the scrapes and adventures of boyhood is set in St. Petersburg, Missouri, where Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn have the kinds of adventures many boys can imagine: racing bugs during class, impressing girls, with fights and stunts in the schoolyard, getting...

This is a contemporary amateur home recording of a live WWII-era radio news broadcast (see note below). This is the May 18th, 1941 installment of Walter Winchell's program of news and commentary, presented in Winchell's characteristically sensationalist style. The program is broken up between three sides on two 10" 78rpm disks; I have joined these together, but there are gaps between the sides. There is also some noise and a few choppy spots near the beginning, and some speed variation....

More was recorded than was needed and then the recordings were edited down to the half hour episodes that were broadcast a few weeks later.
